Memories of Sanctuary – BH365 Songlines for Greenwich Evening

March 12 @ 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Memories of Sanctuary and Refuge:

Meeting Clockhouse Community Cente Defiance Walk Woolwich Dockyard, London, SE18 5QL from 5pm-7pm

Early Spring pop into the centre for a gentle walks or to contribute to one of our local Black History walking project research and exchange evenings (part of Songlines of Greenwich Walking Festival). Together we create walks that interpret and celebrate Black cultural heritage and experiences reclaiming the histories of places, of forgotten or underrepresented people.

On this Wednesday 12 March – 5-7pm Memories of Sanctuary we meet anyone interested in this rich heritage – at the Clockhouse Community Centre – to share our memories, unexpected encounters and researches. Together we will begin exploring  a new set of narratives for the Boroughs of Sanctuary. We think about the river both as a place of sanctuary/transit, and also of exchange; exploring unique histories of black Londoners  – particularly female sailors?! Also examining the rich complexity of migration, through the mysterious annual migrations of African birds. We also think of the long history of migrants and settlements of people from all parts of the globe in response to trade, exploration, colonialism – all part of the history of Greenwich as a Thameside port – its commercial and military naval histories. To weave into our retellings of the Borough’s multi-cultural heritage. For example:

Black Sailors in the British Navy

or Pensioners at Greenwich or the exhibition neglected history of Black Mariners
