Saturday 20 May 2017: Beautification Committee

Meeting at the entrance of CGP London Gallery, Southwark Park, at 11am

Drawing inspiration from the original Southwark ‘Beautification’ projects, this workshop – the second in our ‘Beautification’ series – follows a short part of the Inspiral trail to investigate what makes public space beautiful, in conjunction with CoolWalks as well as Sarah Pickstone’s Other Stories exhibition currently on at CGP London.

The Beautification Committee, launched by Ada Salter in 1920 played a key role within Southwark, creating many of the green spaces, mature trees and landscaping schemes that form an integral part of the Borough’s current environment and feel. At the time Ada Salter proudly proclaimed: “The cultivation of flowers and trees is a civic duty.”

On the walk we will investigate both historical and contemporary examples of urban beautification while exploring other ways to see and use our local environments. The city, made up of all kinds and types of beauty, prompts a number of questions: What should we value most, and how do we capture our own sense of ‘beauty’ or wonder? How can we understand a civic project like the ‘Beautification Committee’ in the face of radical changes to the built environment? And what other types of beauty are worth preserving or promoting?
