Meet at Gallions Reach DLR exit at 2pm Saturday 20 July – Sign up HERE
Join this beautifully varied up from near Becton Gasworks to join the tidal Roding River by the marshes. This walk passes unexpected hidden beauty and heritage sites such as the Ice Wharfs, Barking Abbey, Harts lane Beach, Barking Park and Valentine’s Park.
Wander up the Roding Valley – where Mary Wollstonecraft spent her formative years of her childhood and adoloscence exploring the marshland. Before we then reenter the complex streams of urban infrastructure that divide and subdivide East London – railways, rivers, major roads. All the time walking close by the Saxon river Roding, as it curves northwards towards its source near Stansted Airport.
This river way nourished our walk and allows us to comtemplate once again the foundational power of water, waterways and riverways have been in the construction of the city. We aim to finish our walk just north of Valentine’s Park before 6pm.
